Measure the round diameter or the actual foot positions in both directions. This affects stability and where guests can put their feet.

Mounting plate: the plate or arms immediately below the top, sometimes called the spider. Its dimensions and fixing holes determine how the top connects and how far it extends beyond that support.

Column: the upright between the two. Its stiffness and joints affect sideways movement.

Sub-top: an additional board or engineered support attached beneath some tops. It provides a suitable connection surface and may add to the finished table height.

For an X-base, record the manufacturer’s width-and-depth drawing. Some catalogues quote a tip-to-tip spread or an enclosing diameter instead. A diagonal measurement cannot be substituted for a side measurement.

If you are replacing a base, turn the empty table over onto a protected surface with help suited to its weight. Photograph the whole underside, the fixing holes and any labels. Record the plate’s outside dimensions and hole spacing in both directions. This prevents a floor-size match from becoming a mounting mismatch.

When to Choose a Heavier or Different Base

Keep the chart’s single-pedestal candidates for compatible indoor dining configurations. Change the base specification when the top becomes heavier, the table becomes taller or the unsupported span increases. Each change affects a different part of the table.

Stone and Thick Tops Need More Than a Weight Rating

For stone or a thick, heavy top, prefer a base specifically listed for that top size, material and height, with suitable low-level mass and a stiff column. Check its mounting plate and the top fabricator’s support detail together.

A base may carry a large vertical load yet still allow the table to rock, flex or tip under an off-centre load. A larger plate can improve support beneath the top, but it does not enlarge the floor footprint. A heavier floor base adds resistance to overturning, but it does not repair a weak fixing.

Choose a coordinated heavy-top assembly rather than adding weight to an unsuitable pedestal. The trade-off is a heavier table for staff to move. If the layout changes daily, compare that handling burden before selecting a thick stone top.

Bar-Height Tables Need a Bar-Height Match

Use the base’s bar-height top-size listing for a high-top table. Raising the surface gives a sideways push a longer lever arm at the floor, so a dining-height match cannot simply be carried over to a taller column.

If the same base range reduces the permitted top size at bar height, choose the larger compatible base or reduce the top. Adding an extension to an existing dining pedestal also changes the joints and stiffness; select the complete taller assembly instead.

Long Tops and Outdoor Locations Change the Layout

For the 60- and 72-inch rectangular tops in the chart, start with the specified pair of bases or a two-column frame. A pair of T-bases can leave a more open path for chairs than two large discs, provided the top and base system are designed for that arrangement.

Position the columns around the seating plan and the top’s required support. Moving them toward the ends reduces end overhang but increases the span between supports. Moving them inward reverses that trade-off.

For patios, select components intended for outdoor exposure, including the top, fixing hardware and base finish. Treat wind and umbrellas as separate selection conditions. An umbrella can introduce forces that a normal indoor size chart does not address; use a system designed for that arrangement.

How Much Table Top Overhang Is Acceptable?

Measure overhang from the actual support beneath the top, then use the top maker’s permitted span for that material and construction. There is no single 2-, 4- or 6-inch allowance that works across all restaurant tables. The visible gap beyond the floor base is a different measurement.

Floor-Base Projection and Structural Overhang

For a centred round top on a round floor base:

Projection beyond the floor base = (top diameter − floor-base diameter) ÷ 2.

Suppose a 36-inch round top sits on a 22-inch round floor base. The projection is (36 − 22) ÷ 2 = 7 inches per side. This describes their floor-plan relationship.

Now suppose the mounting plate directly supporting that top is 12 inches across. The top extends (36 − 12) ÷ 2 = 12 inches beyond the plate in that direction. Use this second dimension when discussing unsupported top material. A sub-top or frame can change where the support ends.

For rectangular parts, calculate length and width separately. If the base is off-centre, measure each side directly. For a square top, also examine the corners; a side measurement does not capture the longest reach.

Two Bases: Check the Ends and the Middle

Suppose a 60-inch rectangular top has two 12-inch-long support plates. Their centres are 36 inches apart, placed symmetrically along the top.

Each support centre is (60 − 36) ÷ 2 = 12 inches from its nearest end.

Each plate reaches 6 inches toward that end, leaving 6 inches of unsupported end overhang.

Between the two plates, the clear unsupported distance is 36 − 12 = 24 inches.

Those are three different dimensions. Use the calculated 6-inch end overhang and 24-inch centre gap to compare with the top’s support requirements. If the centre gap is too large, add the specified rail or frame, or change the support layout. Moving the bases inward to reduce that gap will increase the end overhang.

Mark the proposed foot positions on the floor and place the actual chairs around them. This catches a common problem: a support layout that suits the top but blocks a guest’s feet.

Check the Fixing Detail and Finished Table Height

Match the fixing method to the underside material, and calculate the finished height from the complete stack of parts. A compatible footprint alone does not make two separately purchased parts fit.

For laminate over plywood or particleboard, identify the core and usable fixing depth. Use the specified screw type, pilot holes and positions. Worn holes or damaged core material need a repaired or redesigned connection, rather than another screw in the same weak spot.

For solid wood, use a fixing detail that allows movement across the grain. Suitable slotted or moving fasteners hold the top while allowing seasonal expansion. Rigidly locking a wide timber top across its width can cause splitting or distortion.

For stone, sintered stone, glass or thin compact tops, use the fabricator’s connection system. This may use a bonded sub-top, factory inserts or a supporting frame. Do not treat an ordinary wood-screw mounting plate as permission to drill directly into a brittle top.

Check screw length through the whole connection. If a screw passes through a metal plate and washer into a support board, only the remaining length enters the board. It must provide the specified engagement without breaking through the upper surface.

Calculate the Height Before Choosing the Column

Suppose the target finished table height is 750 mm, the top is 25 mm thick, and a sub-top adds 15 mm above the base’s mounting surface:

Required assembled base height = 750 − 25 − 15 = 710 mm.

Here, “assembled base height” includes the floor base, glides, column and mounting plate up to that mounting surface. If the sub-top is recessed into the top, subtract only the amount it actually adds. This avoids counting the same thickness twice.

Put the finished height, lowest underside height and intended chair on the same drawing. A thick apron or support rail can reduce thigh clearance even when the tabletop height is correct.

Check One Complete Table Before Ordering the Batch

Review one complete top-and-base assembly in the intended configuration before repeating it across the order. Use the same top construction, fixings, column height and floor base that the batch will receive.

Record the parts. Note the top size, thickness and weight; base model, footprint and height; plate dimensions; fixing method; and any sub-top or rails.
