This is an initial selection range, rather than a specification for every chair in our collection. A low sculptural chair can sit below it; a high-back or generous armchair can exceed it.

For commercial lounge chair dimensions, separate three formats. An upright lounge armchair supports conversation with feet on the floor. A deeper lounge chair suits a more reclined position, sometimes with an ottoman. A chaise has an extended surface for the legs, so its full length needs a different floor plan.

Do not confuse overall height with seat height. A tall back can sit above a very low seat, and the tall back tells you little about how easy the chair is to stand up from.

How do you measure a lounge chair correctly?

Measure the finished chair with its normal cushions in place, and record the outside dimensions separately from the usable seat. A frame drawing without upholstery can give you the wrong fit.

Measure the outside footprint and the sitting space separately

Use a level floor, a tape measure and a straightedge. For overall dimensions, measure the horizontal or vertical distance between the outermost points; do not run the tape along a curved surface.

Overall width: the widest point across the finished arms, shell or legs. Thick, curved arms can use a large part of the outside width. If the room is tight, compare slimmer arm designs before reducing the sitting space.

Record seat height before and during use

Record the unloaded seat height at the agreed measuring point. For a sloping seat, also note the front height and the lower sitting area. Two drawings labelled “SH 420 mm” are difficult to compare if one measures the front edge and the other measures the centre.

Then sit in the chair and observe how far the cushion compresses. A thick, soft cushion can put the occupied sitting position noticeably below its unloaded height. Compare the final cushion construction, upholstery and glides together; changing any of them can alter the result.

Which dimensions make a lounge chair comfortable?

Choose dimensions that support the intended posture while allowing the user to sit down, change position and stand up comfortably. Extra depth, width or softness helps only when the person can use it.

Start with the posture the chair must support

For upright conversation or waiting, look for back support with the feet supported and shoulders relaxed. An excessively deep seat makes a shorter user move forward to reach the floor, losing the back support you chose the chair for.

For reading, test the chair while holding a book or device. The back should support the chosen position, and the arms should let the shoulders relax. If head support matters, check where it actually meets the user; overall back height alone will not answer that.

For relaxed reclining, a lower seat and greater depth can work with suitable back and leg support. Use that format in a rest zone; favour a more upright, supportive chair where guests need to get up frequently. A mixed public area benefits from more than one sitting option.

CCOHS sitting guidance emphasises supported feet, back contact and space behind the knees. Those are useful checks for upright reading and conversation. A reclined lounge posture needs its own trial with the intended leg support, rather than an office-chair angle copied onto it.

Use a sitting test that reveals a poor fit

Try the actual activities, rather than judging the first soft impression:

Sit back into the normal position. Check whether the back cushion supports you without forcing your head forward.

Place your feet as you would use them. For an upright seat, check that the front edge does not press into the backs of the knees.

Rest your arms, hold a book, and turn towards another person. Notice raised shoulders, sliding or a constant need to perch forward.

Reach towards the proposed table, then stand up. Repeat with the cushion settled under you.

If feet cannot reach the floor in an upright position, try a lower seat or less effective seat depth, depending on which prevents contact. If getting up is the problem, try a firmer, less sunken seat with useful arm support and a more suitable height. Retest the whole posture after each change; raising the seat can ease standing but leave a shorter user’s feet unsupported.

How much clearance does lounge seating need?

Allow separately for reaching a table, entering the seat, and walking past the furniture. A small table gap cannot do all three jobs.

Keep table reach and walking routes separate

A table in front must leave enough room for knees, feet and the movement of standing up, while remaining usable from the chair. Start with the actual seated position and move a temporary tabletop until both reach and entry work. If those needs conflict, put a side table beside the arm instead of forcing a large central table closer.

Protect the walking route outside that sitting area. In a hotel lobby, include luggage and people stopping beside the chair. A path that works between empty furniture can disappear during use.

For a U.S. accessible route, the ADA Standards’ Section 403.5.1 generally requires 36 in / 915 mm clear width, with defined exceptions; turns and passing spaces have additional provisions. Apply the relevant route requirements to the project plan. The gap from a chair to its coffee table is a different measurement, and a 915 mm strip alone does not settle door manoeuvring or the whole layout.

Calculate the whole furniture group

Suppose a straight line across a lounge zone measures 3,600 mm / 3.6 m, from the wall behind a chair to the opposite fixed boundary. Along that line, allow 150 mm behind the chair, an 850 mm-deep chair, a 450 mm chair-to-table gap, and a 900 mm-deep table. The remaining strip beyond the table is:

3,600 − 150 − 850 − 450 − 900 = 1,250 mm.

Now choose a chair 1,050 mm deep and a table 1,150 mm deep, keeping the other inputs:

3,600 − 150 − 1,050 − 450 − 1,150 = 800 mm.

Those two furniture changes consume 450 mm of the remaining strip. If the project needs a continuous 915 mm accessible route there, the second arrangement is already too narrow. Return to the smaller combination, reduce the table depth, or move drinks to a side table. Do not recover the space by removing the room needed to stand up.

The 150 mm and 450 mm gaps are assumptions for this example; test those spaces with the proposed chair. This subtraction checks one straight section. If a second chair faces the first, subtract its depth and its entry/table gap as well. Also draw door swings, side approaches and turning areas before accepting the group.

Allow for swivel, recline and an ottoman

For a swivel chair, check the outer edge as it rotates. The arms or back can sweep beyond the rectangle shown in the resting position. For a recliner, use the largest occupied position and the mechanism’s stated rear clearance.

An ottoman needs a place both in use and when guests get up. Keep its parked position out of the route. Also leave access to curtains, sockets and cleaning areas; a chair that has to move every time a drawer opens is poorly placed even when its footprint fits.

Choose commercial lounge chairs by the job they need to do

Start with the activity and the available space, then choose a chair format that satisfies both. A relaxed hotel-suite chair and a busy reception chair need different priorities.

Project situation

First choice to test

Change the choice when…

Reception and frequent arrivals

Supportive, fairly upright seating with useful arms and easy entry

Users sink too low, struggle to rise, or place feet in the route

Hotel guest room

A compact chair with a reachable table

The chair blocks luggage, curtains, drawers or the bathroom route

Reading corner

A chair with back and arm support in the reading position

The user bends forward constantly or the head support lands incorrectly

Quiet relaxation zone

Deeper lounge seating with suitable leg support

The room must also serve quick conversations or frequent arrivals

Small café lounge corner

A compact outside footprint that preserves usable seat width

Wide arms or a large table consume the space needed for movement

For a tight project, reduce unused bulk before reducing body support.
